Life today has become so complicated that we often feel suffocated by a little something called 'Stress'. Whether it is an eight year old school boy, a thirty year old executive or a seventy year old retiree, everyone feels the stress at some point. But what exactly is Stress?

Stress is the emotional and physical pressure we feel due to our surroundings. It can be real, perceived or both, depending on the kind of situation. Ironically our brain reacts to both the same way. It is commonly said, 'Life acts and we react'. Thus stress is something we feel when we have to face the actions of life, in other words the challenges of life.

So when life gets you down…here are five ways to beat stress – and keep it away for good.

Get Organized: Always plan your work. Doing things in a haphazard way distorts your daily routine and creates unnecessary stress. You tend to feel worried about the pending work, about the forthcoming work. Hence it is advisable to make a time table and get organized.

Eat a Balanced Diet: What you eat contributes to your physical stress. You should always eat healthy and nutritious food. If you eat well, your body feels good giving you the required energy to combat any kind of physical stress.

Set Realistic Goals: If you achieve what you want, it makes you feel happy and pumps the adrenaline in you. Hence always set goals which are practical. Do not aim for things beyond your limits. This doesn't mean to discourage or limit yourself. Simply understand your requirements and focus on them.

Entertain Yourself: Remember the old adage, 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'. The daily routine work, whether office work or household work takes a toll on your mind. So try and take out time from your daily chores to indulge in extra-curricular activities. You might like to sing, dance, listen to music, read books, follow some sports or may be play some sport. Give vent to your hidden talent and realize your passions. You will feel the difference.

Stop Brooding: Let bygones be bygones. Don't sit and brood over the past. There is no way of redoing your past, so just forget it. Think about your future and find ways to make it bright. And most importantly don't worry about your future. Worrying about something not in your hands is even more stressful. Someone has rightly said, 'Worrying is like a rocking chair, it keeps you occupied but leads you nowhere'.

Having followed these steps, you will feel stress relieved. But remember, a little bit of stress is sometimes good. It helps you become strong, resilient and face the hardships of life.
